OKC Local Trivia ~ An Educational Indulgence

There are a few things you should know about me:  1) I love food. That is obvious if you follow my blog.  2) I love adult beverages. Also not a secret. Not to the point where I become the town drunkard, but enough that I like to savor in a group atmosphere and maybe leave my stressful day on the table. 3) I love trivia.

So, I have been on a mission to find the best trivia spots that OKC has to offer. Up until now, my trivia nights had been spent at Buffalo Wild Wings, Henry Hudsons, or Lumpy's playing Buzztime trivia.  There is absolutely no shame in that game, but I longed for something more. Something that reaped rewards other than bragging rights. And damn it, something that I could play with friends, we could pool our answers together, bond, share a laugh, and a win.

Anchor Down

When:  Thursday, 8:00 P.M. - 10:00 P.M.

The first place I sampled was Anchor Down.  The Lost Ogle hosts trivia that particular night. This was a complete unexpected venture that night, and thus inspired this blog.  I had been to a local brewery with some friends when I mentioned wanting to try trivia at The Pump.  They said some other friends were at Anchor Down playing trivia and we needed to go join them.  Thursdays are my Fridays, so naturally I was up for a new adventure.  We trucked it on over to Anchor Down and it was a pleasant surprise.   Anchor Down not only has trivia, but also tons of yums and beers. Home run for sure.  I ordered a Guinness and some Jalepeno Hush Puppies and pulled up a stool to my fellow trivia-playing pals.Teams with 1-25 people pick a name, fill out answer sheets, and wager points.  Prizes are gift cards in the amounts of $50, $25, and $10.  Anchor Down is pretty packed on Thursdays, so arriving early is a must to get a table, some food, and a drink prior to game time.

The Pump

When:  Thursday, 8:00 P.M. - 10:00 P.M.

The next place I tried was my local watering hole, The Pump.  John Souders hosts the live trivia. Teams get rad record covers to use as backing to write their answers on.  What I love about this trivia night, is that after each clue is given, John spins a snazzy tune in which you can ponder or argue over your answer.  Each round has 4 categories, teams wager points, write answers on slips of paper and you take them up to him, doing crowd-pleasing dance steps on the way back to your table. And its best if your team records you and shames you on social media. That's how you know you have arrived. The Pump has tasties that will make even the palette-less eaters salivate. My favorite is the Fried Tacos with a side of Elotes. Icing on the cake is that they have a wide selection of beers, libations, and shots.  Winners get bar credits, but really, with the menu selection there are no losers.

Stonecloud Brewery

When:  Monday, 7:00 P.M. - 9:00 P.M.

The last place I sampled was at Stonecloud Brewery.  Trivia is hosted by Geeks Who Drink .  Stonecloud is a local brewery with 4 oz pours as well as full-sized beers. It's dog-friendly and you can bring outside food in to munch on.  They also have a food truck out front where hungry patrons can silence those beer-induced food cravings. When we went, they had Lucky Lucky Dumpling truck.  Geeks Who Drink is a nation-wide trivia company and they have a solid game.  Each team gets a booklet with all the pages you need per round. Teams are 1-6 people. The night we played, they had movie clips, music sound bites, and lots of other great trivia questions.  Once a round is over, teams take their sheet up to the announcer table.  Stonecloud gets swamped on Monday nights so you want to get there at least 30-45 minutes early as parking fills up as do the tables.  We had 2 teams at our table and we were all squeezed in at a high top. Our team won 1st. We got some great beer glasses, two Stonecloud 6-packs, and a gift card for $20 that we will use on our next Trivia outing.

If you have never tried trivia before, it is a fun experience. Not only do you get to socialize, sip adult beverages, and nibble on some good eats, you also learn. So its educational indulgence.  And if you indulge too much, you can leave what happens at trivia on the table.  Kind of like Vegas, but you are at the mercy of your team and the other people who are witnessing.

The Lost Ogle and Geeks Who Drink have other OKC area trivia nights. You can click on their links to find their schedules.

Until next time,
